Mechanical Seals – Manufacturer of Custom-Engineered Sealing Solutions
Leak-Pack Engineering manufactures the full range of mechanical seals for pumps, mixers, reactors, agitators and other rotating equipment – from economical single spring seals for straightforward duty through to metal bellow and high-pressure cartridge seals for demanding chemical, petrochemical and refinery applications. Every seal is designed, manufactured and tested at our facility in Gujarat, India, and supplied to customers across India and to our export markets in the United States, United Kingdom, Middle East and Africa.
This page is the starting point for choosing the right seal type: what each design does well, which industries and equipment it suits, and how our custom engineering process works when nothing in the standard range is an exact fit.
What Is a Mechanical Seal?
A mechanical seal is a precision-engineered device fitted to a pump, mixer or other rotating shaft to prevent process fluid from leaking out where the shaft passes through the equipment housing. Two flat faces – one rotating with the shaft, one stationary – are held together under spring or bellow pressure to form a tight running seal, while secondary seals and hardware prevent leakage around the faces themselves. The right combination of face material, spring design and secondary seal depends on the fluid, pressure, temperature and shaft speed involved.
Types of Mechanical Seals We Manufacture
Our range covers thirteen product families, each suited to a different combination of shaft type, pressure, temperature and media. Short descriptions and links to the full specification for each are below.
- Single Spring Mechanical Seals – an economical, general-purpose design available in unbalanced and balanced, plain-shaft and stepped-shaft variants, with clutch-type and close-type options for viscous or dirty media. A strong fit for petroleum refineries, pulp & paper, and light chemical process industries.
- Multi-Spring Mechanical Seals – multiple smaller springs distribute closing force evenly around the shaft, giving more consistent face contact than a single large spring in viscous or contaminated media, and performance that isn’t dependent on direction of rotation.
- Conical Spring Mechanical Seals – a conical coil spring design that resists clogging from solids better than a straight coil spring, making it well suited to water and wastewater duty, construction and mining applications, and general building services pumps.
- Wave Spring Mechanical Seals – a compact wave-form spring arrangement suited to applications where axial space is limited, offering steady closing force across a range of shaft speeds.
- Metal Bellow Mechanical Seals – an elastomer-free, edge-welded metal bellow design built for high-temperature and cryogenic service, with several of our models rated from –100°C up to +400°C. Used extensively across chemical, petrochemical and petroleum refinery applications handling hot, cold or highly viscous media.
- Rubber Bellow Mechanical Seals – an economical elastomer bellow design for general industrial and water-duty applications where extreme temperature or chemical resistance isn’t the primary requirement.
- PTFE / Teflon Bellow Mechanical Seals – a PTFE bellow design chosen for its resistance to aggressive and corrosive chemical media where elastomer bellows or secondary seals would degrade. Suited to chemical processing and other high-corrosivity applications.
- Cartridge Mechanical Seals – pre-assembled and pre-set single and double seal units that install without measuring or setting spring compression in the field, cutting installation time and error. Our range spans standard, ANSI-pump-specific, high-RPM and high-pressure/high-temperature variants, with some models rated to 150 bar and up to +320°C, used across petrochemical, pharmaceutical, pulp & paper, mining, oil & gas and food & beverage applications.
- Split Mechanical Seals – split-design seals, along with our labyrinth seals, segmented carbon rings and carbon floating seals, that install without removing the coupling or fully dismantling the equipment. Used on pumps, industrial fans, steam turbines, blowers and as bearing seals on gearboxes and motors, with some labyrinth and segmented designs rated from –100°C to +750°C.
- Agitator, Mixer, Reactor & Blender Mechanical Seals – single and double seals engineered for top, bottom and side entry drives, including dry-running and glass-lined vessel variants for homogenisers, reaction kettles, roto cone vacuum dryers and nutsche filter dryers. Widely used across chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical and food & beverage processing.
- Standard Seals & Component Seals – standard and OEM-equivalent component seals for common pump models, specified where a fully custom design isn’t required.
- Seal Faces – the full range of primary face and secondary seal materials we work with, from carbon resin and silicon carbide through to tungsten carbide and 99.5% ceramic faces.
- Seal Support Systems – API piping plan configurations, flush and quench systems, and other auxiliary equipment that supports seal performance and service life in demanding applications.
- Rotary Unions & Rotary Joints – for applications that need a rotating fluid or media connection alongside, or instead of, a shaft-sealing mechanical seal.
How to Choose the Right Mechanical Seal
The right seal for your application comes down to a handful of operating conditions: shaft diameter and configuration, operating pressure and temperature, the process fluid and its viscosity or solids content, sliding velocity, and whether the equipment needs a single or double seal arrangement. Balanced designs handle higher pressures than unbalanced designs of the same size; bellow designs remove the dynamic elastomer that limits a spring seal’s temperature range; and cartridge designs reduce installation error where field measurement isn’t practical.
If none of our standard product lines is an exact match for your equipment, our Custom Solution engineering team designs a custom or OEM-equivalent seal from your existing sample, drawing, or full equipment specification – including for imported or discontinued pumps where a like-for-like replacement is hard to source.
Industries We Supply Mechanical Seals To
The right seal type also depends on which industry and process it’s serving – a seal built for abrasive mining slurry isn’t the seal you’d specify for a hygienic pharmaceutical bioreactor. Here’s how our range maps to the 12 industries we supply:
